Carole Sloan, RN "The Surgery Center at Pelham"

The Surgery Center at Pelham is part of the complex
known as The Village at Pelham. We are centrally located between Greenville and
Spartanburg on Highway 14-- just off I-85 (Exit 56) in Greer, South Carolina. We
have easy, adjoined access to Physician offices, a lab, and X-ray department and
a Minor Care facility. Within the Village at Pelham Medical complex is a
Community Room which many of you have had the opportunity to experience during
one of Boston Scientifics Educational Opportunities for GI Nurses and
Physicians.
In the fall of 2008,
Spartanburg Regional Hospital will open its Village Hospital. This will be a
full service, 48 bed facility located just across Westmoreland Road.
The Surgery Center at Pelham
was opened in December of 2005. We have 4 Operating Rooms and 2 Endoscopy Rooms.
On average, the facility performs a total of 450 procedures a month. Of these,
approximately 200 are endoscopies. We have a total of 38 employees.
The Endoscopy Department
consists of one RN (myself) and one Endo Tech-Hely Kliamovich. The OR nurses are
rotated through the Endo rooms on a as needed basis. I have been an
endoscopy nurse since 1995 and started here when the facility opened.
Hely joined the staff in 2006
and has quickly become a tremendous asset. She began with absolutely no
knowledge of endoscopy and has become one of the best Endo Techs I have ever
worked with.
Our endoscopy patients are
monitored and sedated by CRNA’s using Propofol. This is my first experience with
anesthesia monitored sedation and I feel it has contributed to our facility wide
98% patient satisfaction rating.
We have Pentax endoscopes and
utilize a Custom Ultrasonic System 83 plus scope washer (which I highly
recommend).
We use the Pentax EndoPro
computer system- which is a computer program that allows the physicians to
immediately compose their procedure report (colored pictures included directly
on the report), customize the discharge instructions, have access to a hard copy
of that report and fax the report to the patient’s referring physician—all
before the patient leaves the facility. Though facility-wide we are not
currently using an Electronic Medical Record, the endoscopy unit is utilizing
the EndoPro with a Nurses Notes addition as a stand alone EMR.
The growth of healthcare in
this area of the Upstate is phenomenal and I am proud to be a part of the future
of healthcare at The Surgery Center at Pelham.
